Become a Mentor
GLODERM brings together a unique community of dermatology professionals with a focus on Global Health Dermatology. We are connecting these individuals, at all career stages, who are passionate about the advancement of skin health in resource-limited communities, locally and globally. This is central to GLODERM’s mission.
Are you a global or community health expert? We invite you to join our Mentor community.
We invite you to join our growing community of mentors. By signing on to be part of our Mentor pool, this does not mean you will have a Mentee every year. But you will be matched one-to-one with a Mentee as appropriate candidates arise. We will always check with you to make sure this works with your timing before formally assigning you a Mentee for the year.
The Mentor-Mentee relationship is likely to be virtual, at least in this first year. There will be networking opportunities as Mentors and Mentees will meet with other Mentor-Mentee pairs online throughout the year. As a mentor, you will need to be willing to attend leadership and mentorship training sessions several times throughout the year as well as, when COVID allows, joining us at in-person GLODERM events for Mentor-Mentee pairs. Signing up to be part of our potential Mentor bank does not necessarily mean you will be matched with a trainee every year, we will contact you prior to any possible pairing.
In future, one element of the Programme will involve bringing Mentees from their country of origin to spend one month with you at your home institution, or if more appropriate, in the field with you at the site where you work on your global health dermatology projects. We do not anticipate the one-month in-person section of the Programme taking place in this year’s 2022/2023 intake. For this first cohort, we hope instead to plan an in-person training opportunity to bring together Mentors and Mentees during the World Congress of Dermatology in Singapore, 3-8 July 2023.
The aim of GLODERM mentorship is to help build the organisational competences required to set up dermatology service and research programmes in resource limited settings in our mentees' home countries. Over the course of the year we hope to focus on enhancing leadership skills, communication and publication competencies, leadership and publication skills, establishing international collaborations and strategic partnerships, and potentially also how to submit successful funding applications.
It is intended that there will also be opportunities for training and skills development for our Mentors, as well as the opportunity to connect and network with other Mentors and the GLODERM Leadership Team. Whilst there is no financial incentive to be a Mentor, we hope you agree that the importance of giving back to our field and training our next generation is invaluable.
The Mentorship Programme is made possible through our partnership with CeraVe (subsidiary of L’Oreal). This grant is part of CeraVe’s new ‘Care for All’ Programme. Their enthusiasm and passion for this GLODERM initiative is much appreciated and we look forward to sharing our achievements and successes with them in the future. The International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) Secretariat supports the project management and administration of the Mentorship Programme.
